Brother, can you spare a spot?

It’s simple math, really: When you have twice as many students as available spaces, you’re bound to run into some parking problems.
That’s the situation at Florida Atlantic University, where a spike in enrollment has combined with a construction-related loss of spaces to create a perfect storm of student frustration. Students at the school held a protest recently, with some saying it can take up to 90 minutes just to find a spot.
Parking issues on college campuses are nothing new. Here’s what some have done to combat the problem:
- Provide shuttles that transport students between on-campus parking lots and classroom buildings
- Reconfigure existing lots to create more spaces
- Contract with vendors to provide valet parking
- Limit parking privileges to students who’ve earned a specified number of credits, and
- Partner with local public transportation providers to encourage students to take the bus to school.
