The school says the group’s application was late – but the group says it was denied funding because of its political leanings.
The University of Wisconsin at Madison collects a student fee that funds registered student organizations.
One of those student organizations is a conservative group called Collegians for a Constructive Tomorrow-Madison. The group sent in a funding application by the stated deadline, but the application was missing some pages. The missing pages were provided after the deadline passed, and the application was rejected as untimely.
The group sued, demanding that funding be provided. It said the school had funded other groups that missed the deadline, and it claimed it was denied funding based on its viewpoint.
The court rejected the group’s bid for an injunction. The school produced evidence that it had denied funding in other cases involving late applications.
