Student: ‘Why don’t you like my on-campus smut film’?
April 6, 2010 by Taylor HanniganPosted in: In this week's e-newsletter, Latest News & Views
A student at this school shot a lewd video on campus and posted it to a free Web site. Needless to say, the school isn’t happy.
Tim Perry, a history major at the University of Hawaii, had a friend take erotic pictures of him in a Speedo bathing suit in University of Hawaii classrooms. Perry then posted the pictures to his blog.
But that’s not all. Perry also shot a video of himself masturbating in a school classroom and posted it on a free porn Web site.
He’s upset with the school’s decision to place him on probation for violating the student code by endangering the health of students and engaging in lewd or indecent conduct. He says he’s just trying to encourage discussion about pornography in society.
Was the school’s punishment too lenient? Too harsh? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Mr. Perry is full of crap. He would not have any difficulty encouraging discussions of pornography on a college campus. He is just expressing his own fetishes and/or satisfying a childish desire to shock people. Since his “expression” took place on University property, the school was right to place him on probation, and would have been right to expel him.

I’m waiting to see what the ACLU will do with this one.
Somehow, someone will twist this into a free speech violation.
In the meantime, if “handy-Perry” really wants to get a grip on the world of porn, he should schlep over to Hollywood and apply for a job at one of the countless adult video production companies.
Otherwise, I hope the custodial crew used plenty of disinfectant in said classroom.

The student’s mistake was in his choice of major. Had he but transferred to the Gender Studies Dept., he could have submitted his video as a senior thesis.
Schools that sponsor porn actors as speakers and encourage students to identify themselves by their sexuality are sowing the wind and should not be surprised when they reap the whirlwind.

Let’s assume in a few years he has children of his own and they and/or their classmates get access to the production. Just imagine how they will be affected (not to mention what his or a typical parent would be enduring now.)
The commercials saying “What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas” aren’t always accurate and certainly what happens in college doesn’t stay in suspended animation as we live out our lives. Unfortunately, the culture encourages such actions.

Indulgence is not synonymous with creativity, but immature artists often believe that shock value and vulgarity is a shortcut. Universities exist to use resources to help nurture students in their story-telling and craft, not to indulge narcissism in the guise of art. The student may not know the difference between exploitation and art yet, but the school needs to enable and foster the better.

Hooray for sexual liberation — particularly on American university campuses which have been turned into replicas of prudish Victorian England and/or Saudi Arabia. The diabolical coalition of politically correct pecksniffs and Evangelical puritans has produced a stifling atmosphere across America. Isn’t it time we simply let go of all this crap and acknowledge that sex is fun and sin is passé?

This is clear voyeurism, nothing else. The school is right on -do you want to sit in the area where he masturbated? I think he should have been expelled.

Hey Nonny Mouse, your post reeks of homophobia and closed mindedness. Just because you encourage someone to identify themselves with their true sexuality does not mean it will lead to porn or idiots like this guy’s antics done for pure shock value. Don’t blame lesbian, homosexual, bisexual or transgendered individuals for this guy’s sick jollies.

Tim Perry should be burnt alive on the stake, just like we did 500 years ago.
April 13th, 2010 at 2:11 pm
The student should have been expelled. Unfortunately, this does reflect on the university.

Some people will craft the most interesting prevarications to cover up their own behaviors, and some will come up with lame lies like this guy.

Of COURSE he should not have been put “on probation.” He should have been imprisoned, expelled, and perhaps punched in the mouth (all by different people, naturally).
April 13th, 2010 at 4:42 pm
The school should throw him out.

Send this young man home for a semester. (where ever home is) or transfer him to the Univ. of Hawaii campus in Needles CA.

Another example of students pusing the proverbial envelope. Only this time the letter was returned “No address.” The university did the right thing by setting a precedent by disciplining this student right away. Voyeurism is not an elective at any universities of which I am aware.

The issue is not with expression of his “message”. The issue is the venue in which the student chose as the location. As a professor, I am not at liberty to present and discuss anything and everything in my class. Only topics related to the academics “at hand”. Many campuses sponsor a “free speech” area. Had Mr. Perry produced the video in this area, a can of gray worms would have been opened. However, classrooms are a different venue altogether. It is no different than a professor making a comment on how many female students he had seen that day with breast augmentations. In a class on gender roles, the role of women in society, even plastic surgery, the comment may be acceptable. In a calculus class, however, it is likely to earn the offending professor a bus ticket home.

Tim Perry is mentally disturbed. He was expelled from the University of North Dakota for threatening to “Take out” the ROTC department after they kicked him out of their program. He spent several days in the mental ward before facing a judge. I heard he was ordered to never return to ND and was escorted to the state line. At least we don’t have to deal with him anymore.

I knew Perry while he was here at UND. He’s more than a little screwed up in the head. He got kicked off campus because he threatened to “open fire” on the ROTC department after getting kicked out of the program for insubordination. After facing a judge, he was escorted out of the state by the police, a seven hour drive. He isn’t some suffering kid expressing himself, he’s a loser who’s going for shock value.
