The student was sent home soon after beginning a foreign studies program in Cuba. Here’s why – and what happened when she sued.
Soon after arriving for a semester in Cuba, University of Washington student Angela Ju started missing classes and required excursions. She complained about alleged medical problems, but she didn’t follow through on recommended treatments.
Before long Cuban doctors concluded Ju presented a psychiatric case. They recommended that she be send home, and the school accepted the recommendation.
After she refused to provide an updated medical clearance form, Ju’s request to return to Cuba was denied. She was also denied permission to participate in a separate foreign studies program in Rome.
Ju sued the school for breach of contract, but she lost. Ju’s behavior while in Cuba justified the school’s decision to send her home, the court said.
