They were ousted for supporting abortion rights and same-sex marriage. But now the student club has been given the OK by school officials. Liberty University still is considering the College Democrats an “unofficial” club. But in an about-face from its previous policy, the school now will allow unofficial clubs to hold events and reserve meeting rooms on the Lynchburg, VA campus. Even more noteworthy, the College Republicans – which the school previously recognized – has now joined the College Democrats under the label of  “unofficial club.” The controversy began about a month ago when Liberty decided to drop formal recognition of the College Democrats because of the club’s stand on abortion rights and same-sex marriage – which goes against the beliefs of the school’s administration. Since then, the school has had to deal with a possible Internal Revenue Service investigation (click here for the full story), and the College Democrats have watched their president and adviser exit the scene (click here for the full story). The new policy is set to go into effect during the upcoming academic year. Talking to the school newspaper, Chancellor Jerry Falwell Jr. said, “The new policy will allow Liberty to protect its Christian mission and at the same time allow the political clubs to achieve their objectives.” So it looks like this will be the end of the story — at least for now.
