How do student athlete academic pursuits compare to their classmates? Check out the differences:

The most common major among players in the NCAAA basketball tournament: business. 140 players take Business, Marketing, Finance and other related academic majors, according to research collected by Slate.

Here are the most popular majors:

  1. Business
  2. Humanities
  3. Communications
  4. Sports Management
  5. Sociology/Social Work
  6. Science
  7. Criminal Justice/Criminology, and
  8. Education.

How does that compare with the general population? Here are the most popular bachelor’s degrees, according to the National Center for Education Statistics:

  1. Business
  2. Social Sciences/History
  3. Health Professions/related sciences
  4. Education
  5. Psychology
  6. Visual/Performing Arts
  7. Engineering/Engineering Technologies, and
  8. Communications, Journalism and Communications Technologies.
