This year’s grads: What’s in store?

The job market is looking a little more encouraging this year, recent surveys show. So what does that mean for this year’s college graduates? Here’s the latest data:
- Nearly 1.65 million graduates will be looking for work.
- The unemployment rate is 9.9%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
- Graduates with statistics majors are the most in demand — up 11% from last year.
- Finance and accounting majors are also seeing starting salaries that are slightly higher than last year.
While there’s no denying it’s a tough job market, there is a bright side: Recent grads are turning to nonprofits, public service and internships in order to find work.
And there are strategies grads can put into place to increase their chances of landing jobs. Here’s what Rebecca Jarvis at CBS News recommends for job hunters:
- Talk it up: Let everyone know you’re searching for work. When talking to classmates who’ve found jobs, ask them: “Did you turn down any job offers?” If they did, see if they’ll give you the contact info and maybe even recommend you.
- Look backward: Think of employers you talked to a year ago — and go back to them. See if their situation has changed. Mention any new skills you picked up since you first applied for a position, and don’t forget to point out you’re now available full-time.
- Don’t rely on social media: LinkedIn and other networking tools can be a great way to get you started. But don’t stop there. Call any contacts and prospective employers. Try to set up a time to meet so they can get to know you — and you’ll become more than a name on a webpage.
