What new grads want most

This is more important to students than money when it comes to choosing an employer, a new survey says.
When KPMG International asked more than 350 university students what’s most important to them when choosing an employer, more than 75% put job security at the top of the list.
Respondents also ranked these non-monetary factors near the top:
- A chance to learn new skills and to develop, both personally and professionally
- Challenging and exciting work, and
- Working with talented colleagues.
Nearly 70% of respondents said they are more likely to pursue a post-graduate degree than employment right after they graduate. And two-thirds said that due to the current conditions, they expect to work for a public or non-profit firm rather than a corporate business.

Nothing in the surveys surprises me, but boy will those students be in for a shock when they learn that the jobs in public and non-profit sectors are disappearing even faster than corporate positions!

New grads would do well to take on an attitude that they are immigrants into the world of work. They need to take on a cloak that screams: “There are no problems, only opportunities.” They need to leave the nest if at all possible, or do what is necessary to help worthy moms and dads survive in a scarey new economic environment.

I agree that new grads would like to have a good paying job along with job security, but the fact of the matter is; job satisfaction……yes, a job that one can wake up to and say “I am going to my job”. I can’t wait to start! Where a job is not a task. It is a position that a person LOVES and would do everything for that job. Now administrators listen up! in order to have this type of person you must talk to this person and make this person feel wanted and appreciated ALL the time. To do this is to create a harmonious environment where everyone feels this same feeling. It take time for all to feel this way but a good administrator can create this cohesiveness in the workplace. Yes, money and security are essential but working at a job where a person does not consider work is the utlimate feeling of one’s worth and should be the goal of every company.
